The Best Christmas in York Events 2017

Christmas reminds us how fortunate we are to be an estate agent in the York area, as there are so many exciting festive events to enjoy.  In this new Christmas in York guide, we’ve collected some of our favourite Christmas events.

St Nicholas Fair

16th November- 22nd December

York’s favourite festive market is in full swing, and has plenty to offer all of York’s visitors. A multitude of market stalls are waiting to tempt you with mulled wine, handcrafted gifts and many other Christmas treats!

Head over to Parliament Street, St Sampson’s Square and The Judge’s Lodging for Scandinavian-style market stalls. The Coppergate shopping centre also offers several festive shopping options, and the Shambles Market is always a safe bet to find some Christmas treats or gifts.

Visit the Shambles on the 16th or 17th to take advantage of their Market Party Weekend!

Finally, why not finish off your York shopping trip with a visit to Thor’s Tipi, a pop-up bar with roaring fires, hot drinks and plenty of Christmas cheer.

Victorian Christmas at York Castle Museum

25th November- 24th December

Christmas tree bauble

York Castle Museum is one of York’s top tourist attractions, so we’re glad to report they’re going all out with their Christmas celebrations once again. Their Victorian street features plenty of Christmas finery; take a stroll and learn all about 1800s Christmas traditions!

There’s also plenty of activities for younger visitors. On Saturdays and Sundays, children can follow a Christmas trail and take part in festive activities before meeting Father Christmas himself!

The museum also offers gingerbread making sessions. Learn all about the history and traditions behind this popular sweet treat and watch gingerbread decorating demonstrations.

For full details, make sure to visit the York Castle Museum website.

Festival of Light at York Minster

8th December

candles in church

This family-friendly event is inspired by Sweden’s Lucia celebrations. They are a fixture in the Scandinavian country and celebrate Sankta Lucia, who brings light to the long, dark Swedish winter.

York Minster’s version takes place a little earlier than Sweden’s, and features a candlelit procession followed by a carol service. If you’re looking to bring a little overseas culture to your Christmas in York celebrations, this event is the perfect choice!

Entry is free and doesn’t require pre-booking, but the Minster suggests arriving early due to the event’s popularity. Visit the website for further details.

York Ice Trail

Saturday 9th-Sunday 10th December

If Let It Go taught us anything, it’s that ice sculptures offer endless possibilities. That’s certainly the case with this offbeat winter event.

The York Ice Trail is one big scavenger hunt, with more than 40 ice sculptures across the city. Past sculptures have been commissioned by local businesses, and if previous years are any indication, there’s going to be some wonderful designs on show!

The sculptures will mainly be in the town centre, with street food and mulled wine available to keep your batteries charged. Glacial Art Ice Sculptures is responsible for each one; visit their website to see more of their amazing work.

Carolling & Crumpets

18th December

piano keys

English history is rich in folklore and ritual, and this event at the National Centre for Early Music is an excellent chance to explore it. Mixing traditional songs with original pieces, the event is hosted by John Kirkpatrick, a prolific performer in the English folk music scene. Expect some impressive squeezebox performances and a highly enjoyable musical showcase!

You can buy your tickets for this on the event page. The National Centre is also running several other events as part of its Early Christmas Music Festival.

As you can see, there’s plenty to look forward to during Christmas in York. And at Quantum, we bring our local knowledge to every aspect of our business.
