Enjoying Easter in York

Easter is an excellent opportunity to get out and enjoy the spring weather.

In honour of Easter we at Quantum have put together this new guide, which brings together everything York has to offer at this time of year.

Whether you’re looking for estate agents in York to rent or to buy, we’re experts of both York properties and the city as a whole.

York’s community is at the heart of the city and Easter in York is a perfect example of this. Here are some of the most popular annual events that happen in and around York.

York Easter Festival

As the UK’s home of chocolate, it’s only to be expected that York goes all out at Easter. Running throughout the month, the York Easter Festival covers several distinct events.

Work up an appetite by going on the Great York Bunny Search. Several bunny sculptures are hidden around the city; each one has a unique design, and will be auctioned off after the event for charity. The Great York Bunny Search map will make your bunny hunt a little easier.

Later in the month you can also look forward to the York Chocolate Festival. Taking place on Parliament Street, the festival is a chance to sample plenty of easy treats.

There will also be live cooking demonstrations, more sweet treats at the Shambles Food Court and several other attractions!

York’s Chocolate Story

Easter is an excellent time to visit York’s Chocolate Story.

York’s history is closely bound up with chocolate; brand names like Kit Kat, Smarties, Terry’s Chocolate Orange and many others originated on York’s streets. York’s Chocolate Story—one of the city’s most scrumptious tourist attractions—celebrates this past with a full programme of events.

Take a hands-on approach with a decorating masterclass, where you can add your own flourishes to an Easter egg, and—best of all—take them home afterwards!

Younger visitors can enjoy an egg hunt at the Merchant Adventurer’s Hall, while chocolate fans of all ages can enjoy a seasonal Easter tour.

You’ll discover the connection between chocolate and Easter, how much we eat at this time of year, and unearth a range of delightful chocolatey facts.

For the latest news, visit the official York’s Chocolate Story website.

Services at York Minster

If you want to get away from the noisier events, York Minster is celebrating the Easter period with some more reflective events.

The Silence in the Minster events allow visitors to engage in silent meditation, accompanied by occasional music and readings of poetry.

The evenings conclude with music by the Ebor Singers, a highly acclaimed vocal ensemble.

The Threshold programme, running over several months, offers a similar experience; each monthly event takes place in the evening, and has a slightly different focus.

York visitors can also enjoy more conventional services. On Palm Sunday there will be a procession from St Helen’s Square to the Minster, with bible readings at the Minster itself.

Easter Sunday offers events from mid-morning to late afternoon, which celebrate Jesus Christ and the joy of the Easter period.

All these events are free to attend and open to everyone regardless of faith. Charges may apply to enter the minster itself. For the latest events information, visit the York Minster website.

Easter with Yorchestra

If your children are musically inclined, and have been playing for some time, Yorchestra is an excellent Easter activity.

This non-residential holiday orchestra is open to children of all abilities, between the ages of 6 and 21.

Music at the heart of Easter

Courses run during the school holidays at Easter, though summer and Christmas courses are also available. The Easter courses focus on children with less experience, making them an excellent jumping-in point.

Student tutors and professional musicians provide children with a high standard of music, and offers them great opportunities to socialise. Easter courses take place in Heslington Church; for further details; visit the official website.

Bishopthorpe Annual Easter Meet

Caravanning is an excellent way to see the country without forgoing some home comforts.

If you’re a Camping & Caravanning Club member in the Bishopthorpe area, their annual Easter meet is an unmissable event.

Running over several days, the event has plenty to offer its visitors; there are competitions for both children and adults, a party tent with quizzes, bingo and other games, and even a surplus equipment sale. If those home comforts are still too alluring, the event is close to a chip shop, supermarket and several pubs.

Local buses to York are also available, as are park and ride facilities.  And with the Yorkshire Coast just an hour away, there’s plenty to look forward to!

Easter at the York Barbican

The York Barbican offers a vibrant mix of events for all ages. Easter is no different, and there’s plenty of interesting events to look forward to.

On Easter Sunday itself, multi-platinum singer (and double Olivier Award winner) Michael Ball will be performing live at the Barbican as part of his 21-date UK tour.

The tour is in support of his new studio album, Coming Home to You, set for release later this year.

A whole variety of shows at the Barbican

If you’ve some younger family members to entertain, the Barbican is putting on a performance of Peter Pan on the 24th of April. Art Attack host Lloyd Warbey appears in the title role, with Tracy Beaker star Dani Harmer as Wendy and comedian Bobby Davro as Smee. With music, dance routines and acrobatics, this is an excellent, family-friendly event to look forward to.

Another highlight is the reggae band UB40, who are embarking on a new tour in honour of their 40th anniversary. Featuring both founding members and long-time contributors, fans can enjoy the band’s greatest hits including ‘Food For Thought’, ‘Kingston Town’, ‘Red, Red Wine’ and many other favourites. Look out for them on the 26th of April.

And that’s just this year’s events. The York Barbican puts on a fun-filled programme every Easter in York, so if you’re wondering if York has the event lifestyle you’re after, why not discover what one of the city’s biggest venues has to offer?
