Finding a New Home in the New Year

The new year is an excellent time for new beginnings and fresh starts. One of the biggest fresh starts, of course, is buying a new home and it turns out the New Year period might be the perfect time to buy.

We work closely with Rightmove for all our houses for sale in York, and we’ve noticed some interesting stats around this time of year.

Between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve 2016, the number of visitors to the Rightmove site increased dramatically. On Christmas Day, they recorded 10 million page views, while New Year’s Eve saw 20 million.

Between the 25th and the 29th of December 2016, the number of page views rose steadily each day, peaking at over 25 million on the 29th.

Things only got better in the new year. From the 31st of December to the 4th of January, daily page views jumped from just under 20 million to 35 million.

The Christmas holidays are a gift for anyone wanting a new home.

As you can see, that’s a lot of people looking for homes in the New Year period. And it’s not hard to see why; there’s plenty of reasons to do so.

Moving house might help you stick to new year’s resolutions. According to researchers from the University of Bath, having a long-term change of scenery allows you to break with bad habits and make real changes in your life.

The Christmas period is a time to relax and reflect on the past year. Without typical worries like work to consider, it’s the perfect chance to conduct a thorough property search.

With the new year emphasis on change, a new home is often top of the list for things to achieve in the upcoming year. The stats from Rightmove clearly show an increased interest in houses for sale, but moving takes time, so January and February are still key search times for anyone looking for a new house.

It allows you to enjoy the summer months more. Kick back and enjoy the nice weather (or as nice as it gets) safe in the knowledge the stress of moving is over.

Not sure whether you ought to move house? A good idea is to reexamine why you might want to move in the first place.

Family. If you’re thinking of starting a family (or expanding an existing one) moving house can give you the additional space you need. It may also put you and your children closer to a good school.

● Career. A long commute can sabotage the working day before it’s even begun. Moving to a house within better driving distance (or better transport links) can save a lot of stress and energy in the long run.

Children are an excellent reason to look for a change of location.

There are also several great reasons to look for houses for sale in York specifically.

● Career prospects. A number of agencies make their home in York, offering several opportunities if you work in this field.

● Culture. With a number of museums, tours and other attractions, there’s no shortage of things to do in York.

● One of the North’s star places. According to the Daily Mail, York was voted as one of the North’s star places to live in 2017. The mix of old and new houses was seen as especially appealing, as well as the traffic-free city centre.

● Transport links. York offers direct services to many major cities including London, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester. This makes it an excellent hub for travelling around the country.

The city offers many opportunities for travel and culture.

If you think a move in 2018 is right for you, there are some things you can do to ensure it goes off without a hitch.

● Get your own property valued. Before you do anything else, it’s important to know how much your property is worth. Fortunately, selling with Quantum makes this as simple as possible. Visit our Selling page and fill out the form to get started; we have 17 years of experience valuing properties in the York area, ensuring your property is in safe hands.

● Make a daring offer (if you think it’s appropriate). If a property has been on the market for a long time, the seller may be wanting to make a clean break with a quick sale at a lower price.

● Start looking for solicitors and removal companies sooner rather than later. Since these companies get booked up pretty quickly at this time (or close down all together over Christmas) it makes sense to get in touch with them as soon as you can.

● Keep people on task (but be mindful of the season). Make sure to ask for regular progress reports from everyone involved, but remember that this is a stressful time of year. Be considerate; show a bit of patience when dealing with people.

Don’t rush into any decisions. Buying a house is one of the most significant financial choices in our lives. Make sure that you’re happy with the property before making any commitments.
If you don’t manage to pull off a sale in this time period, don’t be discouraged! Another spike in house-buying takes place around the Easter period, when the spring months stir up a desire for change and personal development. The hard work you did at the start of the year (like valuing your property and finding a good moving company) will still hold its value later on.

Buying in the new year period could save you significant amounts of money.
